Akaroa!
Abt 2 hours drive from Christchurch, this little French colony was fun fun fun. Firstly, the views were magnificent. Little hills and lots of water at the harbour which leads to the sea, tiny houses with French archi, and the really informational cruise that we took which led us to see sea lions n volcanic rocks n DOLPHINS!
Oh there is one tiny part of the village where many many years ago, there used to be about 300 married couples and in a matter of weeks, that number was reduced to 30! Cos of diseases brought about by the british settlers such as TB. Now the villagers, due to the lack of knowledge, thought that the british gods were much much stronger than theirs and were protecting their british counterparts from harm much better than theirs and hence, converted to Christianity. In fact, that was one of the main reasons why Christianity boomed at that period. Interesting, huh?
The harbour facing this town was actually a crater lake once. Part of the volcano blasted off during a power eruption years ago and now the harbour leads to the sea. =)
