and the highlight of akaroa has got to be the dolphins! there were about 10 or so swimming with us for about 20 minutes. wheeee! i was happy happy! now these dolphins are called hector dolphins. tiny tiny dolphins they are. the tiniest ones ard. ave 1.25m. the female ones can grow up to 1.4m. they're indigenous to nz. and you can tell them apart from the rest by their rounded fin. there are quite a lot of them present at that area cos of the volcanic salts in the water which makes it kinda murky. so they can hide from their predators, the shark! during summer, when the waters at the sea gets clearer, these dolphins actually swim right up to the harbour, where the water remains dark. how cool is that?
